Preparing & Submitting Handwriting Samples

Click Here to download a .zip file containing the text to write when submitting handwriting samples. Or, you can view it on screen and print it from your Web browser.

Here are some generic tips on submitting handwriting samples:

* Submit on white, unlined 8.5" x 11" paper. Black ink is better than blue, but blue is OK if that's all you have.

* Indicate if you will be using your font with Windows, or on a Macintosh.

* Don't forget to include upper & lower case, numerals, punctuation, and all those funny characters above the numerals.

* If there are any preferences for foreign characters or diacritical marks in the upper ASCII character locations, let me know. If there are any unusual idiosyncrasies in the handwriting not captured by the suggested text to write, then include samples of it.

* Include a phone number so I can contact you if something is missing or if I need more samples. Include your e-mail address and I'll send your completed font to you by e-mail for fastest delivery.

Do you have your own scanner? Click here to find out how you can submit your samples by e-mail and save yourself a trip to the Post Office. Of course, if you wish you can still submit handwriting samples by postal mail at the address below.

Viewing Sample Handwriting Fonts

Want to see samples of some handwriting fonts I've made? Then click here to see GIFs ("pictures") of over 400 handwriting fonts I've made recently. You can then download & print the GIFs.

Special Note: If you want hard copies of the GIFs, I recommend using Graphic Workshop for Windows. This is because both Netscape and Internet Explorer will want to print out a magnified copy of the GIF, and because of their large sizes the GIFs will print out distorted.

About the Randomizer Program

With each handwriting font I make, I include my HandForm randomizer program which will make text formatted with your handwriting font look more natural. HandForm is available as a Microsoft Word macro, a WordPerfect 10 macro, and as a DOS program. The Word macro version will work with both the Windows and Mac versions of Microsoft Word (version 6.0 or higher).

The Microsoft Word and WordPerfect 10 versions of HandForm works as follows: Highlight the portion of your Word document you want to randomize, then choose the "Tools", "Macros..." menu selections to start the HandForm macro. HandForm uses information in its configuration file "hf.ini" to modify the selected portion of your document in the following ways:

* It will substitute ligature characters. The ligatures to substitute are given in the "[ligatures]" section of the "hf.ini" file.

* It will substitute preferred pairings for letter pairs. This is useful if several versions of a particular character exists in the font, and some versions look better when paired than other pairs. These preferences are given in the "[preferences]" section of the "hf.ini" file.

* For all other characters, if there exist multiple versions of the character, it will randomly substitute one of the versions of the characters. The multiple character definitions are given in the "[equivalences]" section of the "hf.ini" file.

If you don't have Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, you can use the DOS version of HandForm. The DOS version of it reads and writes only ASCII files, so to use it in Windows you need to follow these 3 steps:

1. Export the part you want to randomize as a text file. An easy way to do this is to copy the selected text to Notepad via the Windows clipboard.

2. Run the DOS version of HandForm.

3. Use Notepad to read the randomized text file (having the filename extension ".hw"). At this point it will look like gibberish, but use the Windows clipboard to copy it into your Windows document and format it with your handwriting font. It will then contain all the right handwriting characters.

If you have a Mac, but don't have Microsoft Word, you can run the DOS version of HandForm on your Mac by using a Windows emulator product like Virtual PC [ Product Info | Ordering Info]. Several more Windows emulators for the Mac are listed and reviewed at www.emulation.net.

* Font Editor for LaserJet Bitmapped Fonts

* TrueType to LaserJet Bitmapped Font Converter

* Logo Fonts, Signature Fonts

* UUencode & UUdecode. Translates binary files to/from ASCII so they can be e-mailed across mail systems that otherwise corrupt binary mail. Source code available -- can easily be incorporated into Visual Basic projects.

* PCLdiet shrinks the size of PCL graphics files by using PCL more efficiently. It generates a "skinny" PCL file by replacing portions of your original "fat" PCL file with more efficient PCL commands understood by your LaserJet. A 60% - 70% reduction in size is typical. If your "fat" PCL file contains lots of straight lines and boxes, up to a 90% reduction in file size can be obtained.

* QuickBasic math expression evaluator, with source code suitable for any Basic or Visual Basic project.
